Calling all bargain hunters STONEY CREEK, ON – Move over, Black Friday. What’s often called “the busiest shopping day of the year” in the U.S. is getting some Canadian competition. While Black Friday is well known for its door crashing specials and ultra-low prices, a growing group of retailers in Canada is determined to go head-to-head with this longstanding U.S. shopping tradition. “Red Day is here!” exclaims Dennis Novosel, President of Stoney Creek Furniture and a Red Day retailer. “On November 28th, 2008 we want Canadians to find the very best deals right here at home.” Many Canadians have made it an annual ritual to book Black Friday off work and wait in long lines at the border to take advantage of the U.S. deals. However, the weakening Canadian dollar makes it less and less appealing to brave the border line-ups to hunt for bargains. While Canadians haven’t been as hard-hit by the recent economic shift as our neighbours to the south, a recent Nielsen survey of 21,000 U.S. households found that 35% plan to spend less this holiday season than they did in 2007. Many retailers are afraid that Canadians will follow suit. “The economy is just one more reason to have Red Day,” says Novosel. “Canadians may be looking to spend more conservatively, but they still want to enjoy the holidays. If retailers band together, we can be part of the solution.” Novosel adds that retailers are truly committed to working together to make Red Day a big success by offering consumers one-day deals that they can get excited about.” But customers do not have to wait until November 28th to find out where the best deals will be. They can log on to www.RedDaySale.com for a sneak peek and even sign up for e-mails to get advance notice of Red Day sales and specials. The website is still welcoming new retailers to sign up and participate, too. “Our goal is for Red Day to grow and grow every year,” says Novosel. “We’re aiming to create a new holiday shopping tradition that Canadians can really look forward to. In fact, with the stronger U.S. dollar, I’d like to see deals so fantastic that American shoppers leave Black Friday behind and line up at the border to shop the Red Day sales in Canada!” Enter here to register for the |
