![]() How to Ensure you Have a Great Caribbean VacationThe winter wind is blowing. You see a great deal in the newspaper - or on the Net. Caribbean sun sounds like a great idea, and it probably is. But before you book, here are a few questions to ask your travel agent or even the resort where you are booking… Jut how inclusive is this all-inclusive? At some "all-inclusive" resorts, buffet meals are included but there is an extra charge for some of the table service restaurants. Sometimes food is included but drinks are not. Often "local" drinks like rum and beer are included, but other drinks are not. There are usually extra charges for some activities like horseback riding or scuba diving. But maybe not. At one place where I stayed, horseback riding was free but you had to pay for any snacks outside of the three meals a day! The point is, ask ahead of time. You don't want to find out that you haven't budgeted enough to pay for "extras" that are essential to you! How kid friendly is this place… If you're traveling with an infant, you're going to need high chairs and change facilities. With slightly older kids, a kiddie pool is a big plus. With kids of any age, a children's activity program and babysitting give you and your partner a lot more options. Make sure you know what is available, and that it WILL be there the week you are coming. Or is it "adults only"? On the other hand, dozens of children running and shouting around the pool may not be what you're looking for in a romantic vacation. Is the place adults only? Is it couples only? If you are in a same-sex partnership, realize that some couples-only resorts accept heterosexual couples only, so be sure everyone is on the same page when you book. While we're on the subject of adults only, be aware that some resorts allow topless or even nude sunbathing while many others do not. Be sure the place you choose is the correct one for YOUR sensibilities. Is it in the hurricane zone? Even in a bad year like 2005, the odds of a hurricane on the particular week you are visiting are slim. But if it were to happen, will your travel insurance help you get out of there? What has that resort or hotel chain done in the past when confronted with exceptionally bad weather? Far more likely is that you will have some rain on your vacation. What indoor activities do they offer? Consider being prepared with books, card and board games, craft projects and whatever will help you enjoy yourself if it does rain. And remember, some islands are drier than others. Check out what kind of weather is most likely in the time period you are considering. Do I like things hopping - or quiet? If you like night life and entertainment, many resorts have live bands and discos. On the other hand, at some places you'll hear nothing louder than the lapping of the waves as the sun goes down. Be sure you know what you want - and choose accordingly. Also, if you're an early-to-bed type, try to get a room far away from where the band plays! Are there lots of stairs? Some resorts are built on a hill side, with lots and lots of stairs to climb every day. If you're fit (or you want to get more fit), no problem. But if you're disabled in some way, this may not be the place to book. Is there lots to do off the resort? If you just want the pool, the beach and a drink in your hand, lots of places will do. But if you have your heart set on exploring local history, or seeing exotic animals, or discovering the wonders below the ocean… check out what's nearby the place you're considering. Also ask about the island's reputation for safety. In some islands renting a car is a great idea. On others, you might want to stick to group excursions. Find out beforehand…. What kind of money should I take? In most parts of the Caribbean, U.S. dollars are a much better idea than Canadian. But there are some new rules regarding U.S. dollars and Cuba. Ask your travel agent about this if Cuba is your destination. A final word… There are many more things you can research, but at the end of the day, travel always includes surprises. Try to keep an adventurous attitude and an open mind, and you can make the best of a lot of situations. Sometimes surprises can have unexpected benefits…. other times, well, it will make a great story afterward. Bon voyage! |
