The Islands

Stories and photos by Tammy Laber

There are more than 25 major islands in the Caribbean, each with its own distinctive personality. That means there's a place for almost everyone - but it helps if you know what's important to you. After all, a quiet birdwatching destination may be wonderful - but not if you're the shop 'til you drop type! Below is a look at the area from four perspectives.

Eco-tourism

Caribbean islands are generally beautiful, and most offer at least some opportunities to observe birds, animals and beautiful local plants. But if nature is your thing, choosing a less built-up island with more unspoiled habitat will make your vacation especially memorable.

Family friendly

For a family, it's hard to beat the simplicity of a resort vacation. Many Caribbean resorts offer amenities and activities to make everyone happy - including Mom and Dad, who can grab some alone time thanks to kids' programs. But before choosing a resort, consider your needs. If you have very young children, a beachfront room may be worth the extra cost so laid-back beach days don't turn into pack-mule expeditions. With older kids, a less expensive pool-view room might be fine; spend the balance on snorkeling trips or windsurfing lessons. Consider a kid-friendly all-inclusive like Beaches, so you know what you're getting into price-wise ahead of time. Otherwise investigate the property's menus - meals can mount up - and the proximity of lower-cost off-site restaurants. Consider at least a couple of trips off the resort to introduce everyone to some local color and culture.

Romantic

Reconnecting with each other is better in the right atmosphere. When booking a resort for a romantic getaway, consider adults-only properties or private villas. All-inclusives that emphasize kids programs are not necessarily the best choice.
