Forget about Nassau if you want to commune with nature. Instead, for a more laid-back eco-atmosphere, try Bimini or Abaco, which is more of an eco-destination with a wild horse preserve and a national park. Of course some people go to the Bahamas just for the diving - it's one of the closest destinations, and the variety is great.
