THE
AWARD
- Designed by Shirley Elford
- Created by Kelly Lowe
The design criteria for this piece is that it would symbolize
the growth and discipline the recipient has achieved without focusing
on any one sport.
The shape is that of an obelisk, which in ancient times, were raised to
mark the achievements and greatness of the Pharaoh's. In present time,
it is used to celebrate and mark achievements in time. As this award marks
the culmination of an athletic year, I feel it is suitable in its design
theme.
I have chosen to create this award using a cast glass process. Molted
glass is poured into a graphite mold. In the pouring process, glass powders
and gold sheet is added to create the internal design. The piece would
then be mounted on a black corion or polished marble base. The piece would
be approximately eighteen inches high with a base four inches by four
inches. The recipient's award would be the same but would be approximately
twelve inches high.
